This past Wednesday, my wife and I took a little bookish adventure to Capital Books—a place we’ve had on our list for a while. Tucked into downtown Sacramento, right next door to the historic Crest Theater, this independent bookstore is a must-visit for any book lover.
Founded in 2019 by Ross and Heidi Rojeck, Capital Books already feels like a Sacramento institution. That surprised me when I read their “About” section—the store is relatively new, but it carries the warmth and character of a place that has been around forever. The Rojecks aren’t new to the book world, though. Since 2008, they’ve been fostering a literary community through their book review company, and their experience shows in every detail of this shop.
Stepping Inside
Even before you walk through the door, you know you’re about to enter somewhere special. Two signs greet visitors outside, setting the perfect tone. My favorite? A quote attributed to Henry Ward Beecher:
“Where is human nature so weak as in the bookstore?”
No truer words have ever been written.
The moment you step inside, you’re surrounded by carefully curated shelves that invite you to slow down and explore. The selection is impressive—not overwhelming, but intentional. You can tell that every book, every display, has been chosen with a reader in mind. It’s a mix of bestsellers, indie darlings, local authors, and unique finds that make you feel like you’re in conversation with the booksellers themselves.
One of my favorite features? The hidden basement level, which adds an extra sense of discovery. It’s the kind of place where you wander down a set of stairs and suddenly feel like you’ve stumbled upon a secret library.

Why Capital Books Stands Out
Beyond the books, what makes Capital Books special is its atmosphere. Some bookstores feel transactional—you walk in, pick up a book, and leave. But at Capital Books, you feel like you’re part of something. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to offer recommendations or chat about your latest read.
They also host author events, book signings, and themed displays, making each visit feel different from the last. Whether you’re looking for a new favorite read or just want to browse, it’s the kind of place where you can easily lose track of time.
And it’s a reminder of why independent bookstores matter. In an era where it’s easy to click “add to cart” online, places like Capital Books create real-world connections between readers, authors, and books. It’s a space for discovery, for community, for getting lost in a story before you even crack open the first page.
